John was a member of the Carmelite Order and was planning to join the Carthusian Order until he met Teresa of Jesus (Saint Teresa of Avila). Becoming a follower, he joined her and began to work in reformation, which was met with opposition and imprisonment by the Spanish government. Becoming John of the Cross, he wrote several poems in prison and was later released. He is widely known among the Hispanic world for his poem 'Noche Obscura del Alma' (Dark Night of the Soul). In 1926, Pope Pius XI declared him a Doctor of the Church.
